The Great Depression
As you may know, the Great Depression was a devastating time for people. The stock market crashed and millions of people lost most or all of their money and/or their jobs. Every one relied on entertainment to satisfy their needs. Horror movies and Sci-Fi were popular because everyone thought, wow, at least I don't have to live with a rabid killer on the loose or a giant gorilla in the city. It made people happier. But, the main entertainment was sports. People would gather around the radio to listen to the World Series (MLB), or the Stanley Cup (NHL), the Super Bowl (NFL), or even Joe Louis's rematch against Max Schmelling (boxing). Sports were important to people and what was about to happen would change sports fans lives forever...
